Metro invites businesses, residents to join clean-up project
The Adopt-a-Spot programme spots can be adopted at no cost to the adoptee who is only responsible for keeping the area clean.
Residents can now play an active role in keeping the metro clean by joining the Adopt-a-spot programme.
The initiative allows for residents and businesses to adopt an open piece of land that belongs to the metro to keep it clean and free from unsavoury elements – dumping, alien vegetation, etc.
The programme, led by the metro’s environment and agriculture management department, and MMC, Katlego Mathebe encourages residents and business to get involved, believing the programme will create employment opportunities and make Tshwane a cleaner city.
Mathebe said that spots can be adopted at no cost to the adoptee who is only responsible for keeping the area clean, but residents may not restrict others from accessing the area or use it as personal property.
“The overall vision of the programme is a cleaner environment for Tshwane residents as this contributes towards environmental awareness. Moreover, landscaping companies can showcase their work and play a role to mitigate climate change,” said Mathebe.
The metro says it will not compensate any organisation or person(s) that join the programme.
“This initiative also builds on corporate responsibility and attracts investments and skills transfer. The development of aesthetically pleasing, healthy and safe public landscapes, open spaces and recreational parks will ultimately benefit all members of the community,” continued Mathebe.
Those interested can visit the metro’s website to download an application form under “About Tshwane”.
Once an agreement is reached between the metro and adoptees on the area in question and how long the adoptee will be responsible for cleaning, the cleaning may commence.
“The adoptee may be entitled to advertise its involvement in the initiative, subject to approval and the City’s outdoor advertising by-law.”
Residents are free to collaborate with their fellow Pretorians or local community groups to help the metro tackle the scourge of litter.
Applications are currently being processed and can be submitted to adoptaspot@tshwane.gov.za or brought to Tshwane House reception in central Pretoria.
