Woman gets four months in prison for false rape accusation
"She said her alleged neighbour was her boyfriend and that she was angry because he was dating another girl."
A 30-year-old woman was sentenced to four months imprisonment for opening a false rape case against her boyfriend.
The woman was sentenced by the Moretele magistrate’s court on August 5.
On February 10, Kedibone Letwaba went to the police station to report a case of rape.
According to Temba police spokesperson Sergeant Herman Moremi, Letwaba claimed that her neighbour kidnapped her from the street by throwing her over his shoulder and taking her to his place where he raped her.
The following day around 09:00 she, however, went back to the station to withdraw the case.
“She said the neighbour was her boyfriend and that she was angry because he was dating another girl,” said Moremi.
The investigating officer obtained her withdrawal statement and immediately arrested her for perjury and defeating the ends of justice.
She was found guilty and sentenced to four months imprisonment or a R2 000 fine, suspended for five years and declared unfit to possess a firearm.
Temba SAPS Brigadier Johannes Tau said many community members opened false cases and that this would be a lesson to those who intend to report false cases.
He applauded the investigating officer for the immediate arrest.
