Top cops honoured at annual District Awards
“The awards play a crucial role for the police by providing an opportunity to boost the spirits of the officers, honour the specially hardworking ones and evaluate their main objectives and progress as the police force,” spokesperson Captain Augustinah Selepe says.
Tshwane’s men and women in blue were honoured recently at the annual District Commissioner Appreciation Awards 2021/2022, in Montana on September 30.
The night was filled with commemoration and recognition of some of the force’s most acclaimed servicemen and women.
The ceremony was attended by distinguished members of law enforcement from every region in the district.
“The District Excellence Awards is held annually, as a buildup towards provincial and national . This event rewards, motivates, and boosts the morale of the men and women in blue for their outstanding achievement and ensures the objective priorities of the service are achieved,” said spokesperson Captain Augustinah Selepe.
The awards are split into 16 categories with individual awards and three group awards categoriawardses. Categories include Administrator of the year, Vispol, Detective of the year, CPF, FCS, Special Awards, Group Awards, and District Commissioner Awards.
Officers from 36 police stations were allowed to put in applications with motivation letters arguing why their work went beyond day-to-day duties and should thus be presented with an award.
Detective Sergeant MM Mosesi of Lyttleton police took home the District Commissioner Appreciation Award for 2021/2022 after a successful year. He traced and arrested over 50 wanted suspects, securing seven convictions (one of whom received 22 years), and playing a key role in the Automated Fingerprint Identification System (AFIS) and tracing wanted person(s) project.
The Brooklyn SAPS won the CPF and Vispol group of the year awards, while the Bronkhorstspruit SAPS received the Detective group of the year.
District Commissioner, Brigadier Samuel Thine hailed the relationships built among law enforcement agencies which have resulted in multidisciplinary operations that have been effective in fighting crime in the district.
“Tshwane district has built a good relationship with various law enforcement agencies. We have initiated various strategic multidisciplinary integrated approaches such as Okae Molao, high-density operations and station crime reduction operations,” said Thine.
Thine also thanked those in attendance.
“Most would say police work is a thankless job. But today’s event is a reflection that police work is at the highest level and is recognised and appreciated.
“Please allow me to thank our dedicated men and women in blue under the police act, as well as our civilian members under the public service act. It is through their hard work and selflessness that the SAPS continues to shine as a beacon of hope within the safety and security cluster,” concluded Thine.
