Students and partners clean up Wonderboom nature reserve
“This is the first clean-up of many to come.”
Students from the University of Pretoria’s veterinary campus teamed up with residents and other interested parties to clean up the Wonderboom nature reserve over the weekend.
“This is the first clean-up of many to come,” said Jed Vaughan, a volunteer from the Onderstepoort Aquatics Club.
“We want to have four more clean-ups in the coming year.”
The students and residents were joined by the Lessons in Conservation NPO.
They also cleaned up areas along the Apies River, its tributaries and the park nearby.
Vaughan said efforts such as these go a long way in preserving the environment and that more should be done about pollution in the area.
“Clean-ups also play an important role in connecting individuals within the community,” he said.
“It’s also good for raising awareness about issues such as pollution and improving the health of the ecosystem and environment around us.”
Ward 54 councillor Elma Nel and members of the Tshwane metro police also took part.
“Whenever I meet students taking an interest in caring for the environment I feel a renewed faith in our future,” said Nel.
As final university exams approach, the clean-ups will only resume next year even though the students believe much more needs to be done in the area.
“Conservation plays an essential role in ensuring we have healthy and safe environments for both ourselves and the animals that live within them,” said Vaughn.
“Conservation is an absolute necessity.”
