Effect of pandemic on kids dire – CMR

The pandemic has had a profoundly negative impact on children of today.
“We are kidding ourselves if we think all is well with our children,” said Henda van der Merwe, a director of CMR Gauteng East.
“As a child protection organisation (CPO) we reach more than 29 000 families annually – and generally, children’s needs are growing. From basic social needs such as poverty relief, to psychological support with behavioural or mental wellness issues, we see alarming trends developing.
“One trend our latest statistics highlights is a 77% increase in children with uncontrollable behaviour. This is a clear result of the pandemic’s effect on our children. Several other factors add to this: lack of parental guidance due to parents not being able to cope, rising alcohol/substance abuse and general emotional neglect, to name a few,” Van der Merwe said.
“Our children’s fund was put into place to help us sustain our services to children. We are heartened by the fact that support keeps growing.
“As our services keep expanding, so does our need for adequate funding. You can support us by donating to the CMR children’s fund.”
