Drunk drivers arrested at Winterveldt and Mabopane over rainy weekend

The rainy weather didn’t prevent police from arresting more than 17 drunk drivers at Winterveldt and Mabopane during the latest Okae Molao anti-crime operation over the weekend.
The operation involved Loate and Mabopane police among others.
It was led by Brigadier Moses Dladla and acting district commissioner Brigadier Samuel Thine.
Taverns and spaza shops were searched in addition to 100 cars that were stopped and searched on a rainy Saturday night.
According to Dladla, many cases of drunk driving were reported.
“A lot of people lose lives because of people who drive under the influence of alcohol.”
Dladla said arresting drunk drivers means that the police have saved a lot of innocent lives.
“We know that when they are drunk they could get involved in accidents. We have a lot of culpable homicides where you find out that someone gets involved in an accident alone and dies,” he said.
In some cases, people were killed by drunk drivers while jogging in the early hours of the morning.
“Most of these drunk drivers who kill innocent lives are often coming back from these taverns, which remain illegally open throughout the night. That’s why we had another department checking the taverns’ compliance,” he said.
Twelve taverns were closed and alcohol was seized in Winterveldt and Mabopane area during the operation.
“After closing them down, we charged the owner for failing to comply with the rules set for tavern owners,” he said.
He said they continued working throughout the rainy night because they know that thieves don’t care about the weather conditions when they plan to commit a crime.
More than 30 illegal immigrants were nabbed throughout the night.
