Tshwane metro to ‘prioritise’ water leaks
"We have allocated R75-million for the replacement of worn-out water network pipelines."
The Tshwane metro said this week that it would prioritise the maintenance and refurbishment of its infrastructure to prevent water leaks.
“This is one of our priorities,” it said in a statement.
“And to put our maintenance plan into action in the current 2022/23 financial year, we have allocated R75-million for the replacement of worn-out water network pipelines.”
According to utility and infrastructure MMC Daryl Johnston, the municipality plans to replace 18 420m of pipes through a series of projects.
This comes as parts of Johannesburg have been hit by intermittent water supply.
Johnston again called on residents to use water sparingly to return Rand Water reservoir levels to targeted levels of 60%.
Levels dropped due to technical issues on their network, coupled with the recent hot weather.
Water consumption in Gauteng is also almost double compared to the global average – at 300 litres against a world average of 173 litres per person per day.
“But while saving water is critically important, the metro has a responsibility to ensure that we maintain our water infrastructure to reduce water leakages.”
He acknowledged that more needed to be done in making sure that all outstanding issues are sorted, adding that this will happen as the metro’s financial woes stabilise.
