5 FM birthday bash attracts youthful audience
Five FM listeners celebrated the station’s birthday in Tshwane.
Madison Avenue nightclub was abuzz with a young, hip and youthful audience who danced to various musical styles from house and pop to rave to celebrate the birthday of radio station, 5FM.
Ashley Mackloen (28) told Rekord that she couldn’t miss her favourite radio station’s birthday celebration.

“I couldn’t miss this day ever, I am so in love with DJ Tshepi and Roger Goode. Them being part of the line-up meant that I should be part of the audience,” Mackloen said.
Lebogang Morupane said he loved the station because of its diversity. He said the station caters to young people from all walks of life.
“Who doesn’t want to be part of the station that represents all ethnic groups in the country? The station literally plays all kinds of music, from R&B, pop, house, rave, hip-hop and electro-house. Now who doesn’t want that?” Morupane added.
He also said 5FM was among one of the best in the world, and it should be the number 1 station that represents the majority of young people in the country.
“Look, I believe every young dude currently in the country is listening to 5FM. There is no other station that has the backing of the youth like this one. I can bet you now, the Top 40 countdown by Nick is probably the best in the world, representing the majority of youth in the country.”

Station marketing manager, Sewela Sebola, said the reason the station decided to celebrate its birthday in the Capital was that the majority of its audience were mainly in the city.
“Besides Tshwane being South Africa’s Capital, it holds about a third of our audience in Gauteng. It is a key strategic audience touchpoint for 5FM, but also has some of the coolest people and clubs in the country, case in point being Madison Avenue. It was a natural fit to have a proper birthday bash in this vibrant city,” Sebola added.
She said she felt happy that as a station they have not lost touch with young people, and the station hoped to build on the momentum moving forward.
Sebola said the station’s intention was to continue building a sounding legacy for the next 47 years.
“Maintaining the top spot for this long is no minor feat, so it’s fitting that we celebrate by creating memorable events, including some epic birthday parties, for our target audiences across some of South Africa’s biggest cities,” said Sebola.
“Most of what we hope to achieve has to do with our audiences – getting ever more people to join the 5FM tribe of listeners and to stay tuned for longer. Covid-19 restrictions have kept us from physically connecting with our audiences for well over two years, so these birthday parties, besides being a load of fun, allow us to reintroduce ourselves to the youth in a big way – bringing SA’s favourite radio presenters, brand-new shows and pumping tunes right to their doorstep.”
