Lyttelton police arrest four suspects for possession of illegal firearm
The arrests brought the number of suspected illegal firearms seized in the area in a single week to three.
The Lyttelton police arrested four suspects in possession of a suspected unlicensed firearm when an anti-hijacking patrol on the N1 spotted a vehicle driving recklessly at the weekend.
“The vehicle was pulled over with the help of the SAPS Gauteng highway patrol unit,” said police spokesperson Captain Dave Miller.
An unlicensed 9mm pistol was found in the vehicle with 17 live rounds. Four suspects were arrested and detained for the possession of the unlicensed firearm and ammunition.
The arrests brought the number of suspected illegal firearms seized in the area in a single week to three.
Police station commander Brigadier Matlala said the police’s hard work and commitment to fighting crime will restore lost trust in the police.
The suspects are expected to appear in the Pretoria magistrate’s court soon.
They are currently being investigated for involvement in other cases.
This was the second successful operation by the police in the area in a space of a week.
Last week, the Lyttelton police arrested four suspects who were in possession of two suspected unlicensed firearms (a 9mm pistol and a 38 special revolver) as well as 9 mm, 38 special and 45mm bullets.
During this time of the year, police in Centurion increase its visibility with roadblocks as well as routine stop-and-search checks.
In 2018, Wierdabrug police employed this tactic to reduce crime significantly during the festive season.
