Metro and Swedish Embassy partner for safer city for women

The Swedish Embassy and the Tshwane Department of Roads and Transport have collaborated to launch the Her City workshop, an initiative aimed at urban development supportive of women.
October is a month dedicated to various causes, one of which is transportation, and in honour of the cause, the parties created a system that would make public transportation safer for women.
MMC for roads and transport, Cllr Dikeledi Selowa, says Her City is a programme consisting of nine steps in a digital toolbox which can be used in urban planning to create a more inclusive city.
“The initiative makes methods and tools available to urban actors globally, and importantly involves women in urban development and puts women in the expert position,” said Selowa.
The toolbox offers numerous tools that can be used to ensure gender equality in city planning and urban development, emphasising transportation safety and public lighting to create a more inclusive city.
“With the toolbox resources in hand, the City will be able to plan and maintain how people engage and experience public spaces with the most vulnerable segments of our society in mind,” Selowa continued.
The Her City toolbox falls within the non-motorised transport guidelines adopted by the metro during the transport month of October, to promote environmental sustainability and guide urban planning.
“Lessons learned at the workshop will be cascaded down to the level of our precinct plans where we have a real opportunity to create a sense of safety and well-being,” said Selowa.
The MMC believes that crime prevention through environmental design will ensure financial investment within the metro and should be prioritised.
She said residents can be sure that the revision of the metro’s comprehensive and integrated transportation plan is currently in progress.
