Grade 1 Curro learner dies at school after being struck by car

Emergency services attempted to resuscitate the learner who eventually died from severe head injuries.

Tragedy struck at Curro Thatchfield Independent School when a Grade 1 learner died after she was hit by a car this morning.

According to Craig van Aswegen from Emergency Medical Solutions, his team arrived on the scene after they received a call from the school just after 07:00.

Van Aswegen told Rekord that the learner was struck by the car of a mother dropping her child off at the school in an accident.

“We attempted to resuscitate the learner but unfortunately she had succumbed to severe head injuries,” he said.

In a holding statement, the school states the pupil died after an incident with a car in the school’s parking lot.

“Curro Holdings confirms that a Grade 1 learner at Curro Thatchfield, Centurion tragically passed away this morning after an incident involving a car accident in the school’s parking lot.

“Counsellors are on site to support the learners and staff at the school.

“Curro’s deepest sympathy and thoughts are with the family and all involved in this terrible tragedy.

“The safety and security of Curro’s learners and staff members remains its top priority and where possible, the group takes a proactive approach in seeking to prevent incidents of this nature.

“The incident is currently being handled by the SAPS,” read the school’s statement.
