Curro Thatchfield provides counselling to staff members and learners
The learner's identity has since been revealed.
All was quiet at the Curro Thatchfield independent school this morning, following the tragic incident in which a Grade 1 learner died after she was struck down by a car yesterday.
“Thursday and Friday this week will not be school as usual as we identify learners and staff who need counsel,” a letter from the school informed parents.
“School will be open, but our programme will not be academic but rather cathartic and remedial. If you prefer, please keep your child at home.”
In the meantime, the matter was being investigated by the Olievenhoutbosch police.
“We are investigating a case of culpable homicide,” said police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Gert Adolf Corbett.
According to eyewitnesses, the deceased’s mother was still on the school premises when the child was hit.
The learner has since been identified as Azania Madonsela.
In bidding farewell to her, the school said it was shattered at Azania’s passing, adding that “it will forever shine her light and celebrate her at all times”.
“Azania, until we meet again, Curro Thatchfield will work to change our community. We will build on your life and legacy,” the school said.
