Tshwane district police host a dialogue to curb GBVF
The police encouraged community members to report gender-based violence cases.
Over 350 people attended the Tshwane metro police’s gender-based violence and femicide (GBVF) dialogue on Friday, October 15 at the Sebothoma Hall in Temba following a widespread increase in such cases in the area.
The dialogue was led by the acting district commissioner Brigadier Samuel Thine, Temba police station commander Brigadier Johannes Tau and Lieutenant-Colonel Mokwana who were seeking to find solutions to the ongoing problem.
“GBV affects almost every aspect of the lives of women and girls,” said Thine.
“The SAPS will continue to prioritise the safety of women and children at all times. I call upon the victims, families, friends, and neighbours to report GBV.”
Captain Augustinah Selepe said the initiative will continue throughout the district “to end GBV in our homes, communities, churches, schools, streets and villages”.
“The dialogue presented an opportunity for stakeholders and community to raise awareness of ending violence against all women, children and men,” she said.
Selepe said Temba is one of the areas in Tshwane that reflects a slight increase in contact crimes between April to June 2022.
“For the last semester of 2021/2022 in Tshwane there was an increase in cases that are before the court, and that is because of investigative work done by the detective,” she said
She said the police will continue to prioritize GBVF-related crimes.
She added they also conduct various awareness campaigns in collaboration with CPFs and NGOs. GBV is a societal matter, hence it is significant to involve the community in the fight against GBV.
“The community was pleased to be part of the activity, as they were allowed a platform to raise their concerns. CPF expressed their commitment to continue raising awareness of GBV,” she said.
The dialogue was supported by various stakeholders.
These included the Department of Community Safety, Department of Correctional Services, Department of Social Development, Department of Health, Department of Justice, Mabopane/Winterveldt office of the Kekana royal executive council (traditional leaders council), Vuka Enough, Avbob and the local CPF.
