Three out of five people clogging centres with unclaimed licences – RTMC
“We want to give people a chance to collect before drastic action is taken.”
Motorists have been strongly advised to collect their driving licence cards they applied for or risk the issuing authority destroying them, the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) has warned.
The RTMC said a massive number of driving licence cards renewed between October and December 2021 remained uncollected at its Waterfall Office Park and Eco Park Centurion offices.
RTMC spokesperson Simon Zwane said: “Our experience is that three out of five people are not collecting on time”.
“We have discovered that some people are not reachable on the phone numbers provided, some have gone out of the country, others are in hospital and a small number deceased.”
He reminded motorists that legislation allowed for the corporation to deface the documents that are not collected within 120 days.
“We want to give people a chance to collect before drastic action is taken.”
The backlog in printing of driving licence cards has been cleared. New DL cards applications can be received within two weeks now.

Zwane said failure to collect the issued licence cards within 120 days, would result in them being destroyed.
He said once an unclaimed driving licence is defaced, the applicant would be compelled to re-apply and pay the costs again.
Zwane said the RTMC centres operated seven days a week from 07:00-21:00.
Zwane said before approaching licensing centres for collection, motorists could check the status of their licences and professional driving permits by doing the following:
For your licence:
– SMS your ID number to 33214. If the reply is “Application Received” it means the application has been received from the DLTC and not yet processed.
For your permit:
– SMS your ID number to 44220.

The Department of Transport also assured motorists, that they would not face delays when renewing their driving licence cards.
“The driving licence card production machine is in full operation and motorists who wish to apply or have applied for renewal of their driver’s licence cards can be assured that there will be no delays in the printing and issuing of their driving licence cards,” said Minister Fikile Mbalula.
The machine was recently out of commission due to power outages coupled with routine maintenance and lack of replacement of parts.
“The driving licence card production machine has had glitches in the recent past resulting in a backlog of driving licence cards [issuing] as a result of the breakdown.
“Since then, however, the machine is constantly under maintenance and closely monitored,” Mbalula said.
