Tshwane metro invests R8-million to refurbish public transport facilities
“We believe that our public transport facilities maintenance strategy will go a long way in improving public transportation in Tshwane.”
The Tshwane metro has invested over R8-million to refurbish and maintain seven transport facilities, which include taxi ranks and bus terminals.
Roads and transport MMC Dikeledi Selowa recently handed over the Rosslyn and Lyttelton taxi ranks, which were refurbished by the metro.
They are two of the seven transport facilities that the metro had invested funds into for refurbishment.
“Five other facilities set for refurbishments will be handed over soon,” said Selowa.
“The scope of the refurbishment work has varied per facility. But they largely entail construction of ablution facilities, access roads, parking and loading bays, guardhouses as well as perimeter fencing, refurbishment of trading stalls and the general provisioning of other basic amenities.”
The maintenance and refurbishment programme covered the following facilities:
– Kalafong taxi rank in Atteridgeville
– Lyttelton taxi rank in Centurion
– Rosslyn taxi rank in Rosslyn
– Dairy mall taxi rank in Pretoria Central
– Belle Ombre bus terminus in Marabastad
– Mitah Ngobeni bus terminus in Saulsville
– Wonderboom national airport in Doornpoort
The Lyttelton and Rosslyn taxi ranks have signed a provisional lease agreement with the resident public transport operators.
“Once approved, long-term lease agreements will be entered into with the public transport operators.
“To have all public transport facilities leased to primary or resident public transport operators going forward is a model the metro is considering.
“We believe that our public transport facilities maintenance strategy will go a long way in improving public transportation in Tshwane.”
