Temba police officer shocks her colleagues after sharing cancer story
“She is a living testimony to others that if you regularly check your health status, you can detect cancer while still in the early stage and you can get help and live a normal life like others.”
During a cancer awareness campaign held last week in Temba, police were surprised after a member of their policing squad revealed that she had beaten breast cancer.
The campaign was hosted by the station and Employee Health and Wellness (EHW) with other stakeholders.
According to Temba police communication officer Sergeant Herman Moremi, the officer was hospitalised for quite some time.
He said she shared her journey with attendees and how she survived it.
“She is a living testimony to others that if you regularly check your health status, you can detect cancer while still in the early stage and you can get help and live a normal life like others,” he said.
He added that attendees were urged to regularly go for check-ups to know their status.
“We had people who are living testimonies to show that knowing your status early and getting treatment early can help beat cancer,” she said.
He said EHW decided to host the event after they found that most members are not taking care of themselves health-wise.
“As social workers, they saw the importance of conducting awareness and educating officers about the danger of cancer and how to take care of their health and encouraged them to start consulting,” he said.
He added that attendees received different health check-ups including dental care, testing for prostate cancer and pap smears.
