N4 closed in Emalahleni due to protest
The N4 has been closed since about 7:30 this morning due to a protest after local residents were left without water and electricity for weeks. Use alternative routes.
A protest in the outskirts of Emalahleni on Monday morning led to the closure of the the N4 highway between the Kromdraai and Mathews Phosa off-ramps.
The highway was closed to traffic in both directions from about 07:30 as angry residents protesting being without electricity and water for weeks, gathered on the highway and left rocks and burning tyres across the roadway.
Matric examinations in the area were disrupted, and learners were not able to make it to school due to the road closure.
The protesters were from KwaGuqa, a new extension outside Emalahleni. Residents said they made attempts to communicate with the mayor over service delivery issues after spending three weeks without electricity.
They said the outages also affected water supply because reservoirs levels in the area became low.
Motorists were advised to use the N12 highway, or take the off-ramp at Kusile power station to link to the N12 to avoid the area.
