Lyttelton SAPS arrest three suspects in truck hijacking
A joint operation led to the successful arrest of three suspects.
A joint operation between Lyttelton SAPS and private security led to the successful arrest of three suspects in connection with a hijacked truck.
Police spokesperson Captain Dave Miller said the three suspects were arrested by law enforcement officers after a search operation in the dense bushes along Main Road close to the Pinedene train station.
“A delivery vehicle was hijacked on the R21 freeway in the Lyttelton policing area. Information regarding the whereabouts of the hijacked truck was limited. That is until dedicated members responded to a complaint of suspicious activity at the Pinedene railway station.
When the members of Lyttelton SAPS arrived, they identified the hijacked vehicle as well as three suspects,” Miller said.
Two firearms as well as the hijacked truck together with all the stock were safely recovered.
Miller said that the firearms will be sent to the forensic laboratory to check if they are linked to other crimes around Gauteng.
“The firearms will be sent to our forensic laboratory to see if they can be linked to any other crimes around the Gauteng area. The suspects will face several charges in the Pretoria magistrate’s court on Monday.
“They will face charges relating to hijacking, possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition as well as possession of the suspected stolen property. Our detective services will be opposing bail and will be following all leads available to link them to further crimes.”
According to Miller, the success of the operation was a result of intensive planning which was put in place by Lyttelton SAPS, after noticing an increase in reported truck hijackings along the R21 freeway.
Station commander Brigadier Matlala commended the officers involved for doing a sterling job in bringing the perpetrators to book.
