Wonderboompoort police visit primary school as part of awareness campaign

The Child Protection hotline 064 934 0630 was shared with the learners and all stakeholders present to report any form of abuse and domestic violence that may be happening in their immediate environments.

Wonderboompoort police paid a special visit to learners at Mayville Park primary school on Thursday to create awareness of the various forms of crime and to encourage them to be police-friendly.

The police station’s social crime prevention and communication units, and the National Centre for Child Protection came together to warn over 400 learners about bullying and human trafficking, and that stealing from each other is a crime.

The learners were encouraged to report any untoward behaviour to teachers, parents and police.

Wonderboompoort police spokesperson Mandlakayise Zwane said during the awareness campaign, police encouraged the learners to use the 10111 number when they’re in danger or when they witness anyone committing a crime.

“It is important as we head into the silly season that kids adhere to their parents’ rules,” said Jessica Loots from the National Child Protection Hotline.

These campaigns are vital as kids’ safety is very important when engaging in activities over the festive season.

“Parents are advised to make children aware of strangers and the dangers around them. They should allow children to be open and to communicate with them because children who lie about where they are or what they are doing are usually the ones who get into the most trouble.”

The Child Protection Hotline (064 934 0630) was shared with the learners and all stakeholders present to report any form of abuse and domestic violence that may be happening in their immediate environments.

The children were also taught about their rights to safety, their rights to health, and their rights to education.
