Proud Mams father’s promising boys follow his footsteps beyond
The Mamelodi Tomorrow Golf Club (MTGC) is set to launch its development programme to advance township golf in Tshwane.
Golf is a tricky game that requires patience, practice and a whole lot of precision. These are qualities that Zachariah Mosiea of Mamelodi is proud to have cultivated in his boys, Tumelo (18), Thabiso (15) and Thato (12).
The boys will be competing in Mamelodi Tomorrow Golf Club’s (MTGC) annual one-day golf tournament on Sunday, November 13 at Pretoria Golf Club, near the Tshwane University of Technology in Pretoria West.
Almost 98 players from Gauteng and Mpumalanga will participate in this year’s event, which will introduce six Tomorrow Golfers to its new development programme.
The elder Mosiea trained as a caddy, and used his years of experience to teach his boys everything he knows. Today, these promising young boys are stepping out and showing that hard work can pay off.
Mosiea told Rekord that his training “assisted my kids to be the best, the big stars of tomorrow in golf”.
The boys draw inspiration from their father’s passion for golf. He bought them books and taught them as much as he could in the open field next to their home.
Mosiea said that he could see from early on that the talent was in their genes. When he practised at home, they would join him.
“They are machines like they were made for this.
“I hope they learn that golf isn’t just a sport for fun but that they can make a living out of it and be the the stars of tomorrow if they put the passion into it.”

The boys each have their own role models, big players that they look up to – besides their father. Thabiso is inspired by Tiger Woods, Tumelo looks up to Collen Morikawa, and Thato is inspired by Hideki Matsuyama.
The boys’ success comes as their club, the Mamelodi Tomorrow Golf Club (MTGC) is set to launch its development programme to advance township golf in Tshwane, focusing first on the young golfers.
“It really means a lot to me, my kids got the biggest opportunity of a lifetime by just being part of the MTGC and so I’m really grateful for the chance that they got,” said Mosiea.
MTGC was founded in the late 1950s by black caddies from Vlakfontein, now Mamelodi. The game of golf continues in what is now known as Mamelodi gardens, playing on dusty sand and isolated greens for putting.
This had developed into an organised social club that has become the MTGC today. It currently has 36 golfers from Mamelodi and surrounding areas.
