32 drivers behind bars for drunk driving in Pretoria over weekend

Immigration officers also arrested 18 people believed to be illegal immigrants.

More than 30 motorists were arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol during a so-called “high-density” operation on Saturday in the Moot and Sinoville, police said.

“Thirty-two people between the ages of 26 and 55 were arrested for driving under the influence,” said Moot police spokesperson Captain Anton Breedt.

Breedt commended various law enforcement agencies that participated in the operation for their success.

These included Gauteng traffic police and immigration officers.

He said such operations would take place frequently as the festive season approaches until January next year.

“Most operations will mainly focus on drivers who break road rules and people who drink in public.

“Operations such as these are important because they discourage motorists from drinking and driving,” said Breedt.

“Many people, including pedestrians, die on our roads during the festive season.”

“We urge motorists to drink at a safe place such as home, to drink responsibly and avoid driving after drinking.

“Irresponsible drinking such as drinking and driving denies motorists and other road users an opportunity to arrive alive at their destinations. It also leads people into making bad decisions that in some instances cost their lives,” Breedt said.

During the operation, immigration officers arrested 18 people believed to be illegal immigrants for contravening the Immigration Act.

All suspects, arrested on Saturday, were detained in the Pretoria Moot police station and they would appear in the Pretoria magistrate’s court soon.
