Man (32) arrested with explosives and illicit cash

Explosives and thousands of rands in illicit cash were seized this weekend when police arrested a 32-year-old man in central Pretoria.

The suspect was arrested on the corner of Struben and Lillian Ngoyi streets on November 11 when police spotted him behaving suspiciously. Authorities had been holding stop-and-search operations throughout the city at the time.

“A search was conducted, and authorities managed to recover four Explogel V6 explosives estimated at the value of R2 300 each. Cash notes found on the suspect were stained with dye and some burnt,” said police spokesperson Constable Thabang Nkhumise.

Upon the discovery of the items, additional reinforcements including the explosives unit, detectives and tactical response were called in to assist with the arrest.

“We’re very pleased with the arrest and we applaud the team for an excellent job. The bombing of automated teller machines (ATMs) in South Africa has over the years become a major concern for both the banking industry and law enforcement agencies,” said station commander Brigadier Moses Dladla.

“These direct losses exclude the costs to repair or replace the damaged ATMs and also that of putting innocent people at risk,” Nkumise continued.

The station commander condemns the actions of the suspect and strongly urges residents to get involved in the fight against crime by reporting any illegal or suspicious activity to the police.

The suspect is expected to appear in the Pretoria magistrate’s court this week.
