11-year-old boy who drowned in Apies River still not found

The boy reportedly drowned on Monday but search efforts were thwarted by poor visibility and fast-running water.

The search for a boy (11) who reportedly drowned in Hammanskraal continues after the first attempt to find his body earlier this week was unsuccessful.

According to Tshwane emergency services spokesperson Charles Mabaso, the boy drowned on Monday, November 14, while he was swimming with seven of his friends in the Apies River.

Mabaso said they were notified about the incident at around 19:00.

“The police were on the scene, but a search couldn’t be held because of poor visibility, fast-running water and high river banks,” he said.

Mabaso said the rescue team searched the Apies River from the hanging bridge to the Babelegi bridge and couldn’t find the boy.

The scene has since been handed over to the local police.

“The SAPS will lead the search going forward and our team will fall under their command if so required,” he said.
