Dry week ahead for Centurion from Tuesday

Centurion residents can breathe a sigh of relief as the skies are expected to clear from Tuesday morning.

Centurion residents can breathe a sigh of relief as the skies are expected to clear from Tuesday morning.

This was according to South African Weather Service (SAWS) spokesperson Wayne van Niekerk.

He, however, said there was a 30% chance of a thunderstorm in the evening.

“There is a 30% thunderstorm this evening, and tomorrow is partly cloudy. From Wednesday to Friday is sunny. So there’s only 30% of rain expected tonight.”

He further assured residents that it was going to be a dry week for Centurion.

This past weekend, the weather service issued a level 6 warning in Gauteng.

Numerous roads were flooded in Centurion due to heavy rainfall. Some of the roads that were flooded were Rabie and End streets.

The rain has led to the closure of low-lying water bridges. Damage has been reported on some routes and households have required water to be cleared.

Tshwane emergency services and metro police were monitoring the known hotspots and closing roads.

There have been incidents of cars being stuck in the floods and households being flooded.

Fortunately, no fatalities or injuries have been reported yet.

A vehicle tried to cross a flooded road and got stuck near SuperSport cricket stadium in Centurion.

The occupants, however, managed to escape unharmed.

“Crossing flooded waterways and low-water bridges should be avoided at all costs because this has been proven in past years to lead to loss of lives and property,” said EMS spokesperson Charles Mabaso.

“Special care must be given to the vulnerable like children and the elderly during periods of adverse weather conditions.

“Good habits like always following reliable weather updates and warnings/alerts issued by the SAWS on all media platforms may come in handy in planning daily activities and avoiding weather-related dangers.”
