Applications for second phase of Marabastad housing project now open

The announcement comes after phase one of the project is wrapping up.

The Tshwane metro is encouraging residents to apply for accommodation in the Marabastad Townlands housing project’s second phase from December 5 to 9.

The project is aimed at providing affordable inner-city accommodation to residents that do not qualify for home loans – R1 500 to R15 000 a month – or government-subsidised housing.

For this round of applications, however, the metro will be targeting residents that earn between R11 301 to R22 000 as the second target group.

The increase in income requirement is due to the metro wanting to build more two-bedroom units for the next phase.

Mayor Randall Williams said: “Townlands offers subsidised rental rates in a prime location that is close to the inner city and various workplaces.

“We look forward to opening our doors to all approved beneficiaries.”

Applicants must meet the following criteria to be considered for placement:

– 18 years or older, employed or self-employed and able to pay monthly rent

– must be a South African citizen earning a household income of between R11 301 to R22 000

– married or single, dependants or without, all are welcome to apply

– must have clean credit and not be under debt review

The announcement comes after phase one of the project, which saw 691 approved beneficiaries being placed, is wrapping up.

The metro previously announced that 6 000 people had applied for units in the housing project since September last year but only 800 were shortlisted and further vetting reduced this number to 691.

To date, the metro says that it has received deposit payments from 223 beneficiaries that have secured their home and are set to move in on December 1.

On October 31, acting human settlements MMC Peggy de Bruin announced that approved first-phase beneficiaries had until November 5 to pay their deposits or risk losing their placement.

The multimillion-rand project’s second phase will once again be handled by the metro’s social housing entity, Housing Company Tshwane (HCT), the builders of the first phase.

The 1 200-unit multimillion-rand mixed-use complex is one of several housing projects that the metro has budgeted for in the 2022/23 calendar year, totalling approximately R800-million.
