Crime lower in Hammanskraal by 48%, but police not letting their guard down

Police give safety tips to commuters in the latest crime awareness campaign in Hammanskraal.

Crime in Hammanskraal in 2022 is 48.2% lower than in 2021, according to CrimeCheck.

They recorded 1 100 cases this year compared to 2 123 cases recorded in 2021, making it a difference of 1 023.

Yet the police are committed to creating an even safer environment by reaching out to the public and giving them tips on how to remain vigilant.

Hammanskraal police gave safety tips to commuters in the latest crime awareness campaign.

Temba police have distributed 480 pamphlets to taxi commuters at Kopanong taxi rank.

According to police spokesperson Sergeant Herman Moremi this was part of their crime awareness campaign.

He said the pamphlets contain safety tips and hints about different types of crime such as robberies, sexual offences, domestic violence, tampering with a crime scene and drug abuse.

“We handed out pamphlets so that our community members know what to do when going shopping or when they withdraw money from the ATM and also to avoid false prophets who aim to scam them,” he said.

Community members were warned about making online purchases and to avoid transferring money without verifying the seller. This is particularly important since there are scammers selling cars online and disappearing with money without handing over the cars.

Residents were also urged to be on the lookout and ever vigilant while shopping.

Police advised commuters not to withdraw large amounts of money from the bank and to avoid lifts.

“Rather use public transport like buses and taxis,” he said.

Moremi said they have already started operations around Hammanskraal to deal with criminal activities.

“We are conducting stop-and-search operations but our focus is mainly on crime generators which are liquor,” he said.

The police will monitor taverns to check their compliance with liquor licences and whether they close on time.

He added that most of the crimes happen during the night from Friday to Sunday.

Moremi encouraged commuters to give the police information about any suspicious activities happening around their villages by calling numbers on the pamphlets or by dialling the Crime Stop line 08600 10111 or 112 on any cellphone network.
