Victims suffering after sewerage flooded their yards receive help
The blocked sewer had not been reported to Tshwane metro until it received an enquiry from the media on Wednesday.
Residents of Mamelodi West flats near Kingsley hostel, who were trapped inside their units last week because of horrible leaking sewage, are finally free to breathe fresh air again.
“Our team of technicians cleared the blockage on Thursday,” said metro spokesperson Lindela Mashigo.
He said the blocked sewer had not been reported to the metro until it received an enquiry from Record Mamelodi on Wednesday.
“The reference number provided does not exist in the City’s fault/complaints reporting system,” said Mashigo.
Resident Papiki Nkgudu of Block I said their health was at risk.
“We hope the problem is permanently fixed because we don’t want to see human waste on our doorstep again.”
More than 30 families were affected by the leak.
“We need to go to the nearest clinic for health screening because we don’t know what the damage of inhaling the stench for the whole week will be,” said Nkgudu.
Children are once again able to go to school and play outside without anyone keeping an eye on them.
Violet Masote, another resident, said finally she was able to use her car after her parking lot flooded.
She was happy that she is again able to open her windows and doors.
Mashigo residents can report sanitation problems on 012 358 2111/ 012 358 999, sewerblockages@tshwane.gov.za or the municipal walk-in centre.
