Viking Ladies gear up for second round of Safa playoffs
Viking Ladies coach Grace Somo said the team is feeling positive, focused, confident and looking forward to the upcoming games following a great start to the playoffs.
Viking Ladies got off to a flying start in the Safa women Gauteng tournament playoffs last weekend.
They played two matches on Saturday against MFSD Ladies FC and the University of Johannesburg (UJ) winning 5-1 and 1-0 respectively.
Ga-Rankuwa-based coach Grace Somo said winning the opening fixture was a good confidence booster heading into the next games this coming weekend.
She said they were ready for anything in those demanding fixtures and knew it would be hard.
“We knew very well that it will be a hard game for us, so we prepared for a time such as this. Fitness is the key to overcoming challenges of this sort,” she said.
“With the hard work that we put in during training, I knew that we were prepared as best we could,” she said.
UJ were fresh after their opponents, Vikings, failed to honour their opening fixture giving them a walkover.
Somo said she wasn’t bothered by UJ’s advantage because her team was prepared.
“Our goal was on the prize, not our opposition. It did not affect us and as a coach, I had to strategise wisely. I’m thrilled it all worked out. Again, I’m so proud of my team for such an impressive performance throughout,” she said.
She said preparation for this weekend’s fixtures was almost complete and they plan to approach them as if it’s their first game.
“We don’t underestimate our opponents… we treat them like any other. We are aware that all games are important to us. There is no easy team. That’s our mentality for sure… we go all out,” she said.
