Tshwane issues new amended waste transportation permits
Residents transporting waste less than a ton will be provided with free service.

The Tshwane metro issued an amended permit on Thursday for proper transportation and disposal of waste.
But MMC for environment and agriculture management Katlego Mathebe said the residents shouldn’t be alarmed by the amendment.
“Waste transportation permits are not new. The City has been issuing waste transportation permits since 2016.
“According to the Waste Management By-law, no person within the jurisdiction of the City may operate or conduct a waste management service of any type, irrespective of whether such service is rendered for payment or not, unless such person is granted written permission to operate such a service by the City,” Mathebe said.
“The City is also guided by the national waste management strategy and other legal framework to ensure that waste is managed sustainably.”
She said people who carried a ton of waste or more needed to apply for the new permit but those who carried less waste qualified for a free service.
“If you are merely maintaining your garden at home and the amount of garden waste does not fill up a vehicle of 1 ton, you are eligible for the free service and you may visit a site once a week. You are therefore not required to have a permit,” she said.
According to the City, the waste transportation permit is charged as a once-off fee, and valid for a renewable period of one year.
