36 illegal immigrants arrested in Soshanguve Block KK

They were arrested during an early morning sting operation and are expected to appear in the Soshanguve magistrate’s court soon.

Thirty-six undocumented immigrants spent a weekend behind bars after they were nabbed by Rietgat police on Friday, December 2.

The immigrants were arrested at a supermarket in Block KK near Batho Plaza in Soshanguve during an early morning sting operation by the police and other stakeholders.

During the operation, 30 pieces of illegal ammunition were recovered while 15 rounds of ammunition were found in a small box inside a mattress.

The rooms of the supermarket also delivered a handheld radio, according to the station’s spokesperson Captain Stephen Maluleka.

“The suspect who is the owner of the mattress will be accountable for the illegal possession of the ammunition,” he said.

He added that among the arrested, there were three women in their 20s.

“These foreign nationals come from Ethiopia, Malawi, Somalia and Zimbabwe,” he said.

Maluleka said the suspects were found hiding inside the supermarket.

“Some hid behind stacks of snacks, some behind packs of diapers, inside bins, crates and one was found on the roof of a stationary truck,” he said.

Rietgat police commander Brigadier Molatelo Maphoto said that he will work tirelessly to make sure that undocumented immigrants are rooted out of his policing area.

“I will never rest until these undocumented immigrants are taken back to their countries where they belong. I am not going to tolerate it when undocumented people do as they please,” he said.

All suspects will appear in the Soshanguve magistrate’s court soon.

Members of the community are urged to continue to report all illegal activities happening in their surroundings without fear or favour.

Rietgat police commander can be anonymously contacted on 082 455 8236, the station on 071 624 6250 or 08600 10111.
