Truck loses load on Onida Avenue in Meyerspark

Ward councillor Ben Chapman says that the City was attending to the matter as quickly as it could, but advised motorists to use alternative routes.

A truck carrying bags of white powder lost its cargo on Monday morning, December 5, in Onida Avenue between Van Der Merwe Drive and Rauch Avenue.

Ward councillor Ben Chapman said that the City was attending to the matter as quickly as it could, but advised motorists to use alternative routes.

“The road is still closed, but they are cleaning up the area and trying to open the road as soon as possible,” said Chapman.

“The problem with this is that there is a 5-ton sign posted and this vehicle clearly exceeded the 5-ton specification.”

He said that this is an ongoing problem as truck drivers take chances on this steep hill. “Truck drivers ignore the sign that was posted. This is not the first time this has happened.”

The double trailer truck jack-knifed and toppled over, blocking all three lanes of the road.

Motorists are advised to make use of Watermeyer Street to bypass the area.
