Golf club unearths new talent in Mamelodi

Mamelodi Tomorrow Golf Club launched its development programme to develop township golf in the City of Tshwane by focusing on young golfers.

A 12-year-old Tumelo Moseia of Mamelodi was crowned the upcoming golfer by the Mamelodi Tomorrow Golf Club (MTGC) at its annual golf competition on Sunday.

The competition was held at Pretoria West Country golf club and hosted by MTGC.

Balekele Mothiba and Abram Nkomo walked away with first prizes for the ladies and men golf competition respectively.

Nkwena Selepe, organiser of the competition said six young golfers participated in events in Mamelodi and Moseia did exceptionally well.

He said MTGC will host a youth golf day next year.

“Forty-eight players participated in the one-day competition from expected 98 players across North West, Gauteng and Mpumalanga,” said Kwena.

“MTGC, in its long years of existence, launched its development programme to develop township golf in the City of Tshwane by focusing on young golfers.”

MTGC was started by caddies in the late 50s… black caddies from Vlakfontein, now called Mamelodi.

“The game of golf continues in what is now known as Mamelodi Gardens, on dusty sand and isolated greens for putting.

“This had developed into an organised social club, MTGC,” said Kwena.

He said the club has 36 current active golfers in Mamelodi and surrounds.

Kwena said the club was successful as it has inspired more sponsors to come on board in the coming year.

He further said a lot needs to be done as there are many young players between the ages of 10 to 16, who are talented in the township and need to be recruited.

“With golf equipment being so expensive, we will need more support from the business community to come on board and change the face of social golfers to professional golfers in the black townships,” he added.

The competition was sponsored by Grin Inc, a dental practice and Barako Funerals.
