Roads body calls on road users to snitch on reckless driving
On the footage, the driver of the car with a Gauteng number plate, could be seen blowing a kiss at motorists behind him before swerving right onto the R57 to Pretoria.
A traffic organisation has called on law-abiding road-users to blow the whistle on reckless drivers.
The Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) was responding to a guilty finding in a case of a 39-year-old foreign arrested for his reckless driving in 2021.
Ikhalar Ul Haq caused a sensation in December last year when video footage of him steering his vehicle with his feet while sitting on the window frame emerged on various social media.
On the footage, the driver of the car with a Gauteng number plate, could be seen blowing a kiss at motorists behind him before swerving right onto the R57 to Pretoria.
A concerned motorist on Moloto Road filmed the incident to highlight the recklessness that endangered the lives of other road users.
The motorist reminded road-users that they can report such recklessness to the RTMC or on the Arrive Alive website.
RTMC spokesperson Simon Zwane said Ul Haq was found guilty by the Cullinan magistrate’s court on Friday sentenced to a R8 000 fine or eight months imprisonment as well as given a driving licence endorsement that forbade him from driving for six months.
Zwane said driver behaviour including reckless and negligent driving was a major cause of accidents hence RTMC had decided to trace the offender.
He said Ul Haq was found at his business in Marble Hall a week later.
“He was arrested and taken to Kameeldrift police station where he was charged. His trial was delayed when his mother passed away and he had to travel to Pakistan for the funeral.
“RTMC restates its commitment to deal with all forms of unscrupulous behaviour on the roads and calls on members of the public to make the roads safer this festive season.”
He said reckless driver behaviour as well as bribery and corruption can be reported to his organisation by WhatsApp on 083 293 7989 or email ntacu@rtmc.co.za
“Driver behaviour, including reckless and negligent driving is a major cause of fatal crashes on the roads in the country. Those who get involved in such conduct must be called out so that they can face the full consequences for their misbehaviour.”
