Light up your weekend with some festive events

A weekend of dazzling lights must be on the cards this weekend. Give back while you enjoy the festive spirit.

Start off the December holidays with some events to remember, from Christmas light shows to live music and even a cool synthetic skating rink.

Lawley Street lights, December 9 and 10

The spectacular Lawley Street lights are up again, dazzling visitors for the entire December from 19:00 to 23:00 every night. The legendary lights are best seen on foot, so a night time stroll must be on the cards this weekend.

While the lights are on every night, Friday and Saturday will be extra special. On December 9, catch the Vespa Ride. The Vespas will meet at 18:00 in Hazelwood before making their way to Lawley Street for a fun parade among the lights. Then come back on December 10 for the “Liggie” Run, where classic cars will parade down Lawley in support of Wollies animal shelter. Organisers ask for animal food, blankets, or toy donations, with camping chairs welcome to enjoy the vibe from the side.

Jakaranda Liggiesfees, December 9-11

Not sure what to do with the kids this weekend? Maybe the perfect outing is the Jakaranda children’s home Liggiefees, with a dazzling display of Christmas lights, over 20 different food stalls and entertainment with a synthetic skating rink, a double merry-go-round, a train and for those not on the naughty list, maybe even a photo with Santa.

What’s more, this weekend only, catch performances by Steyn Fourie, Stephan Kruger and Neil du Preez. Proceeds and donations for this event will go to a special cause as the children’s home looks after 344 children. Your fun outing will help these children in need have a better festive season. Visit them in East Lynne this weekend. For more information: 082 416 7073.

The Social Picnic, December 11

After a long year, it would be refreshing and relaxing to come together for a social picnic in the park. This event will take place on the Pioneer Museum grounds in Keuning Drive, Silverton. Tickets cost R100 per person and R50 per cooler box. Hubblies, camp chairs, and gazebos are welcome, with braai facilities available at the premises. The event starts at 12:00, contact 076 470 1608 for more information.

Refentse @ Padstal, December 10

Afrikaans music lovers are in for a treat this weekend with a performance by this 2022 Aitsa Award winner.

Tickets are available on Quicket or at the door. Refentse hits the stage at 21:00.

Gelofteweek, December 8-15

The Voortrekker Monument will be opening its grounds for this year’s Gelofteweek with a full line-up of entertainment alongside their other offerings. Performances will include Kerssang by the Kerslig-Konsert, Pieter Smith Boereorkes and Mandjiedans, Adam Tas with a chilled-vibes performance, shows by Piet Smit, Ilán, Diedré and Jay, and a film screening.

The performances are free, but parking costs R20 per vehicle. The week of festivities includes a Boeremark and a Christmas market.
