Tshwane mayor officially opens Mamelodi fire station
The new station will assist our emergency services respond to emergencies swiftly.
Tshwane mayor Randall Williams, and his MMC for community safety, Grandi Theunissen officially opened the new Mamelodi fire station recently.
The R55-million station, in Region 6, was built from the ground up by the City and completed late last year.
It is currently fully operational with teams of firefighters, company commanders and emergency medical care technicians who operate in three shifts in the service of residents of Mamelodi and surrounding areas.
Theunissen said the new station will assist emergency services to respond swiftly.
He said this fire station is the first of two for the community of Mamelodi, and has been fully functional since September 6.
“In 2016 it was agreed by the emergency services that Mamelodi was in dire need of a fire station in the community, because at that stage the closest was about 15km away making it difficult to respond in time,” said Theunissen.
He said a contractor was appointed in 2018 with construction started in 2019 and completed in April 2022.
The project was scheduled for completion in nine months but due to unforeseen circumstances ran over to 24.
“There were a lot of site disruptions, a lot of rain that delayed the project, shortage of materials, Covid-19 and vandalism,” he said.
He was proud to announce that despite the delays, the project did not incur budget overruns.
Councillor Rabasotho Masuphe said he was happy to hear another fire station was planned for the area and hoped the metro would start building it soon.
He encouraged the community to take care of the facility.
“We are experiencing a lot of shack fires in Mamelodi and with this new station, the emergency services will swiftly respond on time,” said Masuphe.
Williams said he was proud to declare the Mamelodi fire station fully operational and that it has already attended to 73 emergencies as well as acted as backup support to Rayton, Bronkhorstspruit, Silverton and Erasmuskloof fire stations.
He said the station had adequate resources in the form of fire and rescue vehicles, a fire truck/rescue pumper, a water tanker, a bush pumper and a rapid intervention unit.
