Law enforcement brings perpetrators to book over the weekend

The detectives made 277 arrests of which 134 arrests were for gender-based violence.

Through several crime prevention operations in Tshwane around the central areas, 641 suspects spent their weekend behind bars for various crimes.

The weekly operation conducted in different parts of Tshwane was led by Tshwane district commissioner Major-General Azwinndini Nengovhela.

Perpetrators were arrested for assault, assault related to domestic violence, robbery, possession of the stolen property, tampering with essential infrastructure notably but not only electricity cables, theft of motor vehicles and fraud.

Sunnyside and Brooklyn policing areas were the main focus on January 21 for the multi-disciplinary crime prevention operation.

The operation included several roleplayers such as the National Traffic Police, Gauteng Traffic Police, Tshwane metro police, Departments of Labour, Home Affairs, Correctional Services, Community Safety, Tracker and members from several SAPS units and stations from across the Tshwane policing area.

Roleplayers were deployed in three groups, comprising a roadblock and two compliance groups that were posted in Sunnyside and Brooklyn respectively.

During the operation, 554 persons and 235 vehicles were searched with a resulting 211 Aarto traffic infringement notices that were issued to the value of R88 400.

Seven persons were arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol.

Other arrests include 69 undocumented immigrants and another one for possession of illegal substances.

A total of 23 premises and eight liquor premises were searched and 235 250ml of liquor was confiscated and will be destroyed.

In an intelligence-driven operation, three suspects were arrested and linked to multiple cases of theft of motor vehicles throughout the Tshwane district.

Nengovhela thanked and congratulated members of the force and all other collaborators who took part in the operation for their hard work which led to successes achieved through these operations.

He cited the operation as having been successful and noted that this will be undertaken regularly in future.
