Mountain View resident turns 90 years old
The 90-year-old has seven children, nine grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
Maria Landsberg celebrated 90 years on earth this past weekend, and she attributes her longevity to her strong faith.
The “young lady” spent a lovely afternoon surrounded by her children, grandchildren and great-children this past January 19 in Mountain View, Pretoria West, an area she has stayed in for the past 69 years.
“We would like to congratulate our unique mother and grandmother on her birthday and wish her strength and blessings for the years that the Lord will spare her for all her loved ones,” said eldest daughter, Emmie Avenant.
Landsberg was born in Senekal, Free State, on January 19, 1933. She moved to Irvine, Mountain View in 1956 after marrying her first husband on August 29 of that year.
Maria had been married to Karel for 43 years when he died on February 19, 1996. The couple had seven children – five daughters and two sons – all of whom went to school in Mountain View and the surrounds.
“I feel quite old”, Maria laughed, “but very grateful to God for blessing me with this life and for being surrounded by my loving and supportive family.”
Throughout her 69 years in Mountain View, Maria says that what she enjoys most about the area is its serenity and a strong sense of community, though admits that of late, the issues facing the country have blemished the sheen of the area a bit.
“When I first came to Pretoria it used to be quite nice, but now, not so much. With the problems at Eskom, and then with the water, it has been difficult sometimes,” Landsberg continued.
Maria moved in with her daughter and son-in-law into an apartment on Robinson street after her husband’s death. Two years later she remarried Willie Nel, who passed on nine years later.
Maria worked for many years in admin for the Nursing Association at the time and is an avid helper in her church and community at large.
Landsberg advises others to keep their faith strong, no matter the circumstances at the time.
