Hardy Muller circle a source of many problems

Residents allege that taxis are using the circle as an unofficial taxi rank.

The Hardy Muller Circle in Kilner Park has been the source of frustration for many motorists in the Moot, especially accompanied by illegal advertising boards and recklessly driven taxis.

Ward councillor Mari Joubert and the metro wish to inform businesses in the Moot of the limits on the size of outdoor advertising boards.

Joubert and the metro have received numerous complaints about the size of the advertising boards at the circle, with many bigger than the legal limit.

According to metro by-laws, posters shall not exceed the legal limit of 841mm x 594mm (A1 size) in all categories.

“I want to warn residents not to exceed these limits as they will be fined heavily by the municipality if they do,” said Joubert.

The traffic in and around the circle has been causing problems for other motorists for a long time.

Most motorists complain that taxis use the circle as an unofficial taxi rank making the area hazardous and a nightmare to navigate.

Joubert said that motorists have been asking for guardrails to be installed to stop the taxis from using the circle as a taxi rank and disrupting traffic.

“If metro doesn’t have the budget for guardrails, then it can at least put a warning sign somewhere close to the circle.”

Non-working streetlights have also been a continuous problem making the area even more unsafe for motorists.

Ward councillor Roche Grebe said the broken lights make the area extremely unsafe at night.

Grebe said the area around the toll gate is especially dangerous due to the high amount of traffic.

He adds that the dark streets pose an especially greater danger to pedestrians walking home in the evenings and early mornings.

“Motorists can be sure that their councillors are aware of the challenges at the circle.”
