Tshwane denounces bogus city ‘electricians’ in Mamelodi
“These impostors carry with them an identity card bearing the city’s false logo with their name and ID number.”
The Tshwane metro has denounced a group of people purporting to be electricians contracted to the City going around in Mamelodi attempting to persuade customers to bypass electricity connections to their households.
Tshwane metro spokesperson Selby Bokaba said these bogus electricians descended on Ikageng, Mamelodi East, situated next to the University of Pretoria’s Mamelodi campus.
He said they offered to assist customers to tamper with their electricity meters in return for cash payment on the spot.
“These impostors carry an identity card bearing the City’s false logo with their name and ID number with them.
“The City’s contractors carry a different identity permit,” said Bokaba.
He said Tshwane metro was outraged at the audacity of these criminals whose intention is to cost the municipality millions in revenue loss and to fleece unsuspecting customers.
“Criminal activities such as electricity theft are financially bleeding the city dry. This, in turn, negatively affects its ability to honour its obligation to creditors such as Eskom and Rand Water,” he said.
Customers are advised to be vigilant and refuse the services of these lawbreakers and report them by contacting the Tshwane metro police on 083 657 2998 as soon as they are approached.
“Should any of our customers have colluded with these bogus electricians, they will be slapped with a hefty fine for tampering with the city’s infrastructure. Rather report them without any delay,” Bokaba said.
He warned these impostors that they will be arrested, charged and prosecuted, as their actions are criminal.
