Nine suspects arrested for drug possession in Pta CBD

The crime prevention operation consisted of SAPS reservists and community patrollers to address lawlessness within the Pretoria Central precinct and surrounding areas.

Nine male suspects between the ages of 32 and 52 were arrested for drug possession and dealing during a Central SAPS crime prevention operation on January 24.

The male suspects were found in possession of dagga and other illegal substances sealed in packets intended for distribution.

“One of the leading arrests was that of a male suspect, aged 23, who was caught at the corner of Boom and 8th streets with a large amount of dagga. The dagga was sealed in small packets.

“The man was later charged with dealing in dagga,” said Central SAPS spokesperson Constable Thabang Nkhumise.

Another man was arrested after being found with large amounts of unprescribed medication. Patrollers and reservists were conducting stop-and-searches when they came across the suspect in question at the corner of Struben and Lillian Ngoyi streets.

Upon approaching him, he tried to hide behind other pedestrians; however, the crime prevention team were able to pick him out. Upon searching the suspect, authorities recovered a large number of pills that the suspect was carrying in a shopping bag.

After a preliminary investigation was held, it was determined that the pills were antiretrovirals, a medication used to treat HIV patients. Eighteen packets of tablets and 11 bottles were confiscated and the suspect was taken into custody.

“The medication is not for purchase, no letter of authorisation was given upon request and further inquiries will be conducted to find out how he acquired the medication,” Nkhumise stated.

Station commander Brigadier MM Dladla applauded the officers for a job well done and encouraged them to keep up the good work.

“Operations such as these prove that police visibility can yield good results,” said Dladla.

“Drugs consumption and trading remains a problem within the city, and the community is urged to come forth to report any criminal activities anonymously,” Nkhumise concluded.
