City manager meets Tshwane staff to boost morale in wake of leadership vacuum

“Teamwork is the cornerstone of our collective effort to improving service delivery.”

The Tshwane metro city manager has urged his staff to remain focused and continue to provide services even while the metro is without a mayor and mayoral committee.

City manager, Johann Mettler addressed his senior staff at Tshwane House on Tuesday.

Mettler reminded staff that the work of government did not stop in the absence of political executive leadership.

“I implore you to focus on the targets we have set ourselves at the beginning of the financial year and to enforce project and performance monitoring to ensure that we accomplish our committed objectives.

“This is the opportune moment to strengthen and invest in our communication structures with our stakeholders, including ward and PR councillors regarding service delivery in our communities.

“Teamwork is the cornerstone of our collective effort to improving service delivery. This is the time to give true meaning to our motto of Igniting Excellence,” said Mettler.

Mettler’s attempts to boost morale and service delivery comes at a time when the metro is experiencing a huge backlog in attending to power outages, potholes, overgrown grass and crime in the metro.

Tshwane is expected to elect a new mayor on February 28.

SA municipal workers’ union (Samwu) chair Mpho Tladinyane recently welcomed the legal opinion confirming the immediate resignation of Williams.

“Samwu in Tshwane notes and welcomes a legal opinion that has been furnished to the council on the resignation of Councillor Randall Williams.

“We call on the speaker of council to convene an urgent council meeting to elect a new mayor who will turn the tide and focus on fixing the mess that has been left behind by Cllr Williams and his administration.”

Tladinyane said the union was concerned for the well-being of workers in the political offices as their contracts of employment were linked to those of their principals.
