Tshwane district police arrest more than 400 suspects over the weekend
Police arrested more than 50 undocumented immigrants.
Tshwane police made a significant dent on crime over the weekend, arresting more than 400 suspects.
These arrests come hot on the heels of another major success where 369 suspects were arrested in Cullinan and Ekangala last Thursday.
Warrant-Officer Johan van Dyk said the suspects were arrested for crimes such as assault, domestic violence, robbery, murder, armed robbery and child neglect.
“On Saturday, March 5, a multi-disciplinary crime prevention operation was conducted in the policing areas of Mabopane and Loate SAPS.
This combined operation, which was led from the front by Major-General Azwinndini Nengovhela, included several role-players, such as Gauteng traffic police, home affairs, correctional services, community safety, several SAPS units and stations in Tshwane,” Van Dyk added.
He said the operation focused on a roadblock and compliance raids.
He said 801 people and 503 vehicles were searched, while 24 people were arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol.
“Other arrests include 56 undocumented immigrants and one for possession of drugs. Eighteen liquor premises were searched of which six were closed down and 529 605ml liquor confiscated and will be destroyed.
“The detectives arrested 279 people including two for murder, four for armed robbery and 123 for gender-based violence.”
These multi crimes prevention campaigns are part of the SAPS’s effort to curb crime in the city.
District commissioner Major-General Azwinndini Nengovhela thanked his counterparts for the sterling job they did over the weekend.
“I would like to congratulate and thank all role-players for their continued support and hard work for the successes achieved in these operations,” Nengovhela concluded.
The Cullinan-Ekangala operation inspected 11 liquor outlets and shutting down one due to a contravention of the Liquor Act.
According to Van Dyk, a total of 672 persons and 359 vehicles were searched during that operation.
