Four arrested during Lyttelton police op

A man, who allegedly assaulted a police officer, is one of four persons arrested.

A man, who allegedly assaulted a police officer, was one of four people arrested during operations by the Lyttelton SAPS over the weekend.

One arrest was for public drinking and the other two for assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm, said police spokesperson Captain Dave Miller.

The operation saw SAPS officers being joined by reservists to conduct tactical stop-and-search and targeted patrols in Lyttelton on Saturday night through Sunday morning.

By the end of the night, Miller said public drinking and the assault on police arrests were made during the operation’s stop-and-search phase.

The operation began with a tactical planning session for the evening where it was split into two phases.

The first phase included stop-and-searches at hot spots in Lyttelton and the Centurion CBD.

The second phase included targeted patrols to combat housebreaking and drug-related crimes.

In the first phase, officers taking part in the operation split up those suspected of drinking in public while looking for intoxicated residents that could cause public disturbances.

After checking in at the usual hot spots and breaking up potential law-breakers, the officers split up into tactical patrols that targeted areas that had experienced burglaries or drug-related crimes.

SAPS members also checked that any firearm found during stop-and-searches was licensed.

Officers also helped a member of the public whose car got stuck on the side of the road.

Miller told Rekord that officers were quick to respond to calls and track down suspicious vehicles.

The operation ended at 04:00 on Sunday morning.

“Those wishing to commit crimes in the Centurion area should know that a dedicated team is waiting for them,” said Miller.

“Centurion is not your playground.”
