Two teenage boys left traumatised after attack at Loftus stadium

Eight men posing as security personnel allegedly assaulted the two teenagers and robbed them of their phones.

Two 16-year-old boys’ fun during a rugby match at Loftus stadium was short-lived when they were assaulted and robbed of their cellphones on Saturday night, March 4.

Steven Reader and his friend Donovan de Klerk were accosted by eight men disguised as security officers.

The group of men allegedly wore orange security vests. They put a knife to Steven’s throat and took turns attacking his friend.

Steven’s mother, Monica, said that the two were going to check whether her car was still okay when they were attacked.

She said her son was threatened and the robbers kept on shouting, “give us the phone or you will die”.

“They took Steven’s phone and told him to leave, but instead he took a few steps backwards and called me using his friend’s phone.

“In the middle of our conversation, the robbers noticed he was on a call. They snatched the phone while shouting and threatening him as he tried to fight back.”

Monica said after hearing the shouting over the phone, she feared for their lives.

“I was scared that the boys would be seriously assaulted or something even worse could happen to them. I found them outside and immediately called the police who came and searched the area to see if they can’t find the robbers.”

She said the boys were traumatised and had since gone for counselling.

“It was a traumatic experience for them who only went there to watch and enjoy a match of their favourite sport. Things took a wrong turn and our evening was ruined by this horrific ordeal,” said the agitated mother.

Monica said they went to Brooklyn police station on Monday, March 6, to open a case, but claimed the police were not very helpful.

She left and went to the Welbekend police station and managed to open a case, which was transferred to the Brooklyn police station.

Brooklyn police spokesperson Sergeant David Baloyi told Rekord that the station did not receive the case.
