‘House robber’ swiftly caught

“He ordered her to give him her bank card and PIN so he could withdraw money.”

Mamelodi police have taken a 22-year-old male suspect into custody in connection with a house robbery on March 7.

It is alleged the suspect knocked on a known woman’s door in Mamelodi east, SNS, looking for her son around 10:30.

Police spokesperson Sergeant Daphny Maila said the woman told the suspect that her son was not in the house.

She said the 22-year-old suspect then ordered her inside the house.

“The woman complied as he was carrying a sharp knife,” said Maila.

The suspect then demanded money which she did not have.

“He further ordered her to give him her bank card and PIN so he could withdraw money,” said Maila.

However, the woman gave him the wrong PIN.

“The suspect proceeded with his plan to go withdraw by tying her hands to a chair while he went to the nearest ATM,” she said.

She added that after a while, she received an SMS that her card had been blocked due to a wrong PIN being entered.

“The woman screamed for help and managed to untie herself.

“A neighbour responded to her call and phoned the police,” said Maila.

The police arrived and since the suspect is known, went to his home where they arrested him.

The suspect will appear in the Mamelodi magistrate’s court on charges of house robbery.

The police encouraged the public to report any suspicious persons to the police at 08600 10 111.
