Rietgat police host Jukulyn crime awareness campaign
During the campaign a community member told law enforcement to stop searching for criminals in distant places but inside the police force.
Batho plaza in Jukulyn came alive on Thursday when Rietgat SAPS, local CPF and Gauteng Department of Community Safety hosted a crime awareness campaign.
This campaign follows a string of hijackings, robberies, house-breakings and mob justice in the area recently.
About 40 patrollers clad in their regalia took part in raising awareness on crimes gripping the Rietgat SAPS precinct.
Police spokesperson Captain Stephen Maluleka said the plaza was selected because it is central to the community and contributes to the high volumes of crime in the Rietgat policing area.
“About 1 500 pamphlets on car hijacking, house robbery, drug abuse, gender-based violence and femicide as well as mob violence were distributed to the people of the precinct.”
Shoppers were warned about the prevalent crimes in the area.

“We advised the people to call station commander Brigadier Molatelo Maphoto if they have any information on crime in the area,” he said.
Most shoppers appreciated the effort and vowed to heed the information on the pamphlets.
Community member Nthabiseng Sekwati said such awareness campaigns should spread across the country to enlighten all and sundry.
“I wish these initiatives could touch every part of South Africa so that everyone can know these tips so as to reduce the level of crime in country,” she said.
Another community member told law enforcers that they must also look within themselves not just beyond for criminals.

“As the police, you must start by cleaning your own house before going out to the streets to look for criminals. Most of the crime and corruption is borne from the police force.”
Tenants of the plaza appreciated the initiative and promised to assist patrollers with some necessities when they are on the job.
Maluleka said the following numbers can be called for a swift response from the police: Client Service centre on 071 675 6250 or Brigadier Maphoto on 082 455 8236.
