Put security measures in place to also keep responders safe
The CPF asks residents to keep their properties free of any hiding places.
The Moot police and local CPFs are urging residents to put measures in place to make it safe for responders.
SAPS, CPF and private security companies are expected to respond to emergencies during all times of the day which can present certain challenges.
“Nothing is worse than arriving at a property at night that is poorly lit or has overgrown grass surrounding it.
“This puts the lives of responders in danger as criminals can easily hide in these properties,” said Moot CPF chairperson Elsabe Weyers.
The Moot CPF asks that residents pay attention to the following:
– Proper security lighting around the house and on the perimeter wall. Solar lights are ideal given the frequency of load-shedding.
– Clear the garden of unnecessary shrubs, overgrowth, dilapidated structures and other areas criminals might use as hiding places.
– Check the condition of your fence with neighbours.
– Clear perimeter fences (inside and outside) of shrubs and overgrowth.
– Secure gate motors with anti-theft brackets.
– A large, clear house number on the perimeter fence near the gate will help responders find your house.
“It is unfair to expect the guardians of the community to put life and limb at risk when some members of the community don°t take the measures to keep their properties safe,” concluded Weyers.
