Free health checks and more during visit to Mams hostel dwellers

Residents could test for HIV, TB, blood pressure and chronic diseases during a visit to the Mamelodi hostels by several government departments as well as the police.

Residents could test for HIV, TB, blood pressure and chronic diseases during a visit to the Mamelodi hostels by several government departments as well as the police on Tuesday.

Departmental representatives also spoke to hostel dwellers about applying for the R350 Sassa grant as well as smart ID cards and other services.

The visit involved local police, in partnership with the departments of health and home affairs, Sassa, the Mamelodi CPF and the Congress of Traditional Leaders of South Africa (Contralesa).

Police spokesperson Sergeant Daphney Maila said the visit was part of the annual Cheka Impilo national wellness campaign.

Maila said they were happy with the response from hostel dwellers.

Residents had the opportunity to ask questions about the police and they also had a platform to raise their concerns about police services within the community.

“The residents could share their concerns and complaints during the meeting,” said Maila.

She said some of the issues raised were solved immediately while others were referred to the relevant departments.

“We are there to serve the community and it helps when the police and the community have a good relationship in combating and preventing crime.”

She encouraged community members to report crimes at the station.

They visited hostel dwellers next to the Muckleneuk sports grounds and the programme ran from 09:00 until 14:00.

Maila said that the police rendered a 24-hour service and that the public should report crimes at any time by dialling 079 890 7469 or 08600 10 111 or 112 free from all networks.
