UP improves global subject ranking

“These rankings reflect the high quality of UP’s academic staff, 70% of whom hold PhDs,” says Prof Tawana Kupe.

University of Pretoria (UP) is a globally competitive university, it said after the rank of its subjects was upgraded recently.

Vice-Chancellor and principal Professor Tawana Kupe said 21 subjects offered at the UP have been ranked best among universities globally.

He said UP increased its share of subjects in the 2023 Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) world rankings from 20 in 2022 and 18 in 2021.

Among the 21 subjects in the QS world rankings, eight were rated top in South Africa.

Kupe said the ranking helped position UP as a globally competitive university.

“These rankings reflect the high quality of UP’s academic staff, 70% of whom hold PhDs,” he said.

“Further enhancing the academic strengths of the university is the growing number of postgraduate students choosing to make UP their academic home.

“Over and above our high-quality educational offerings, the university has very fine facilities and a commitment to being human-centric and making an impact in all that we do, making UP welcoming as well as academically excellent.”

He said the UP subjects with a high global ranking were accounting and finance, agriculture and forestry, theology, divinity and religious studies as well as law.

Three of the subjects were making an appearance in the QS rankings for the first time – materials science (third in South Africa), natural sciences (fourth) and physics and astronomy (seventh).

He said two subjects – mineral and mining engineering – again ranked in the top 60 worldwide at 35 but second in South Africa.
