Police clamp down on wanted suspects during weekend operation, 688 people arrested

The police arrested 688 people in Tshwane at the weekend as part of a clampdown on wanted suspects.
Operation leader Gauteng deputy police commissioner General Tommy Mthombeni said a team of senior police officers conducted an extensive search and patrol effort to track down all wanted suspects to reducing crime and squeeze the space for criminals.
He said the operation netted suspects for murders, business burglars, housebreaking, theft, kidnapping, assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and pointing of a firearm.
“Eighty-three suspects were arrested for being undocumented foreign nationals, 18 for driving while under the influence of alcohol and one for possession of ammunition while three unlicensed shebeens closed down,” he added.
Police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Mavela Masondo said other suspects arrested during the operation were suspects for rape, armed robbery, fraud and sexual assault.
“Some of the suspects were released after paying admission of guilty fine while others are expected to appear before various magistrate’s court from Monday,” he said.
